Today, health and fitness have reached a level of awareness that has never been achieved before. This awareness is not only for the people who are not fit. Even the slim and proportionate looking people strive to be fit. People have realized that being healthy and fit is not just about being the correct weight, but also has good stamina and agility. It is vital for the body to be supple and agile. In this day and age when technology does everything for you and the internet spoon feeds you, there is a very little need and scope for physical work.

This is the digital era. Everything is found online. Everything can be done online. With one click, bills are being paid. Shopping is done. Investments are taken care of. Beauticians and doctors make home visits. People work from home. There is essentially no need to step out at all. This is when health and fitness topic takes priority.

The problem is that people start to worry about health only after issues crop up. Until then, anything and everything seems allowed. Sugar is not cut down until tests show diabetes. Fatty foods are not reduced until there is a blockage in the artery. Calcium and iron are not consumed in appropriate numbers until the doctor tells you that you are prone to osteoporosis and anemia.

What is fitness?

It is a term that is well defined and very inclusive in nature. It talks about being fit, not just physically, but also mentally and emotionally. It is vital that all three points are covered. They are mutually dependant on each other. It is not possible to be happy when the physical body is unwell. Similarly, a person cannot be physically fit and active when he is depressed or unable to think rationally. Fitness is truly a beautiful term that should be given a lot of thought to.

Why is it important to be fit and healthy?

Being physically fit enables the body to be resistant to illness including serious issue such as cardiac arrests. A relaxed state of mind is very crucial for physical health. A physically and mentally fit person can face various challenges. A physically challenged person can still be considered to be fit and healthy, though his physical movement will be compromised.

  • Strong
  • Good stamina
  • Endurable with respect to cardio-respiratory

Why is there so much hype about being physically fit today?

This is a very busy world. People have to symbolically run extremely fast just to stay in the same place. Competition is high. The stress levels are soaring. There is really no time to sit and relish good food. Sandwiches and pizzas are eaten in hurry at all odd times in random places just to satisfy the hunger. Sodas and unhealthy drinks are consumed. The general state of the mind of the people makes them indulge in fatty and oily food. This kind of unhealthy consumption is being treated as comfort food to make them feel better after a long and stressful day at work. Mental stress is as bad as a virus attack. It might be easier to take a tablet and cure a cold but the stress that the body is facing is much harder to attack.

There have been cases reported where IT professionals have had heart attacks at their work desks because of long days, high stress and untimely meals. This has raised serious cause for concern. Young adults suffering from strokes are a sign that health is not being taken seriously.

How to stay healthy

  • Drink lots of water
  • Exercise regularly
  • Eat healthy food with a balanced diet
  • Sleep well. It is very vital too
  • Take Sufficient rest
  • Take time off to relax. Do what you love. It could be sports or movies or just reading a book.
  • Cleanliness is essential to be healthy. A dirty environment is disease prone
  • Stick to a routine. The human body is like clockwork. It will tend to respond well to a schedule.
  • Activities like music, yoga and simply laughing more can be effective.
